Birches need full sun, being generally intolerant of shade. Birches in general tolerate a wide range of soil types. Paper Birches can handle soils slightly drier and more alkaline than normal (pH 5.0 to 8.0).
Birches are a bit difficult to transplant. For best success choose young trees that have been root pruned and whose root balls are wrapped in burlap.
