A yard that has trees and shrubs with lots of dense undergrowth is attractive to wrens. They will seek protective shelter in shrubby areas bordering open lawn or patio spaces from which they make forays in search of insects. If possible, establish a big brush pile in a corner of the property. Allow an old tree with natural cavities to stand in an inconspicuous spot. Wrens like aging fruit trees and also frequent sugar maples, bayberry, pine, oak and sweetgum. Mulch the bare soil around planted areas of your property. Organic mulches harbor lots of insects beloved by wrens.
A source of fresh water is critically important for all bird visitors to your yard. Set up a birdbath if you do not have a natural source such as a creek or water garden.
