Landscaping For Nuthatches

To attract nuthatches to your yard for pest insect control and entertainment at the feeder, plant and maintain a variety of trees and shrubs for food and cover. Allow dead and dying trees, decaying stumps and rotting, fallen trees to remain on remote areas of your property as long as they are not a hazard.

Because they are partial to conifers for both nesting and food, plant pine, fir, black spruce and cypress to welcome nuthatches. Red-breasteds like giant arborvitae, too. In the East, white-breasteds will visit orchards and stands of deciduous trees; in the West they frequent conifers, juniper and oak. Consider planting oak, beech, shagbark hickory, and maple trees as well as sunflowers, Virginia creeper elderberry and other berries in your yard to entice them to stay and raise their families.
