Dahlias look striking massed together in a bed of their own. Dwarf types are ideal for the front of perennial borders or as edging plants to soften the transition from drive or walk to yard. Medium height plants can be tucked in among shrubs, or planted in rows for a low hedge effect. Situated in a perennial bed, dahlias add texture, foliage contrast (the bronze leaved ones) and mass as well as their remarkable display of flowers. Use late summer bloomers to fill in spots abandoned by earlier blooming perennials. Use the very tallest, exhibition types of dahlias along fences and at the backs of beds. Planted in rows, they will screen an undesirable view.
