Watering Violets

Mulching
Mulching helps control weeds, conserves soil moisture, and keeps soil from splashing up on the flowers. Where violets are incorporated into a garden bed or other formal site they look more attractive with a thin layer of some organic material like wood chips, chopped leaves, or dried grass clippings spread on the soil around them.

Propagation
Because violets spread readily forming larger and larger clumps, the best way to aquire more plants is by dividing existing clumps. When the plants first emerge in the spring, dig the clumps up gently. Use a sharp knife to slice through the massed roots, cutting them into smaller plant chunks. Replant these smaller plants promptly.
