Choosing Climbing Roses
`Paul's Scarlet Climber' is a classic favorite in deep red. `New Dawn' features large, pink flowers. `Royal Sunset' has large orange-pink blossoms. `Golden Showers' has yellow blossoms. Few true ramblers remain except in areas where they thrive -- Nantucket, Cape Cod and the Oregon and Washington coasts. These areas usually feature at least 2 or 3 naturalized rambling roses. `American Pillar' is the rambler often found in old gardens. `Chevy Chase', `Dorothy Perkins', `Thousand Beauties' and Crimson Rambler' are other well known rambling roses.
There are many, many wonderful climbing rose varieties available commercially. The best way to choose is to look for the metal tag on the bush that has "AARS" on it. This indicates that this variety meets certain stringent criteria established by All-America Rose Selections, an organization which runs test gardens all over the country to determine the quality of various roses,
