Caring For Shrub Roses

Monthly Tasks For Shrub Roses
Month of JanuaryShrub Rose – If you like your shrub roses and might want to plant some more, check out the new shrub roses for 2004. Go to Yardener’s Helper and enter “Shrub Rose Choices” in the search window.
Month of FebruaryShrub Rose – You can prune bush roses for shaping purposes before any new growth begins.
Month of March
Month of AprilShrub Rose – This is a good time to fertilize Shrub Roses. Sprinkle one cup of slow-acting granular all-purpose fertilizer on the soil under each shrub out to the distance from the trunk to the tips of its branches (its drip line).
Month of May
Month of JuneShrub Rose – Shrub Roses do not necessarily bloom all summer as do the bush roses. So don’t panic if your plant stops flowering for a few weeks in the middle of the summer. It will come back with blooms in the fall. You do not need to dead-head Shrub Roses.
Optional – giving your Shrub Rose a light application of granular slow release fertilizer this month gives it some energy in facing the heat of the summer. Use about one half cup of fertilizer per plant.
Month of July
Month of August
Month of SeptemberShrub Rose – If you want more Shrub Roses, plant them this month or next month.
Month of October
Month of November
Month of December
