Leyland cypress grows in Florida, yet is hardy enough to withstand winters as far north as the Ohio Valley, southeastern Pennsylvania and along the Atlantic coast into New England. It is their versatility that recommends Leyland cypress. They are not fussy about their growing conditions. They will tolerate poor soil as long as it is not boggy. Soil that is either on the acid side or the alkaline side is okay. These cypresses like some sun, but will also accept considerable shade, much more so than junipers.
