Species	Size	Basic Requirements
Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora}	Mature height is 60 to 80’ feet with a spread of about 30 to 50’. Medium growth rate	Zones 7 through 9. Newer cultivars have extended the range in which the Southern Magnolia can be grown northward into Zone 5. Full sun to partial shade, is extremely drought tolerant. It does best in rich, well-drained, acidic soils.
Saucer Magnolia (Magnolia x soulangiana)	Mature height of 10 to 20’ with a spread of 10 to 20’. It has a moderate to slow growth rate	Zones 5 through 9. Prefers full sun or light shade with well-drained, moist soil. It will not tolerate very wet or dry conditions.
Star Magnolia (Magnolia halleana, recently, M. stellata)	Mature height is 10 to 15’ with a spread of 7 to 10’. This is a slow growing tree	Zones 5 through 9, full sun and prefers moist, well-drained acidic soil. It does display adaptability to varied soils.
