Using Osage Orange

Osage-orange is used in landscape design but some folks have reservations. Its advocates admit to its being more of a “picturesque” tree rather than a beautiful tree. It possesses strong form, texture, and character, but as it matures it has a thick, gnarled appearance that for some appears ominous and foreboding, a good tree under which to sit and read an Edgar Alan Poe novel. There are now on the market several male thornless varieties of Osage-Orange that are being used in home landscape, along city streets and in institutional settings.
