Heather can be naturalized in open areas with soil so poor that is will not support most other plants. As a ground cover it will help hold soil on banks. It blends nicely into perennial borders, the low growing types in the foreground, taller ones in the back. It also co-exists nicely with small shrubs, adding color to foundation plantings.

Pruning/Cutting Blossoms For Drying: The various heathers are staples for dried plant products. Pick the stems when flowers are at their peak. Tie them together and hang them upside down in the dark for 2 to 4 weeks. Choose a warm, dry attic or garage for this. Store the dried flowers in paper bags until they are used.
