Using Lily of the Valley

Lilies-of-the-valley look lovely planted alone or inter-planted among ferns. They are ideal for otherwise difficult spots beneath trees, near walls, or between shrubs. They will do well in beds that face north. They do tend to be invasive, however, and can take over a flowerbed, so it is best to plant them in more informal areas.

Cuttings/Interior Design: Lilies-of-the-valley make lovely additions to small floral arrangements. Cut those stems where new flowers are just opening early in the day. Plunge them into warm water for a few hours before arranging them in a container with other dainty flowers such as johnny-jump-ups, creeping phlox, Jacob’s ladder, columbine and sweet woodruff. Add an equal proportion of a citrus-based soda (non-diet) to the water to preserve flower freshness. For more information see the files on Keeping Cut Flowers and Cut Flower Supplies
