Choices of Rosemary

Common rosemary grows to about 2 ft indoors, tends to shed its needle-like leaves when dry. It likes a cool rather than warm spot and does well in the winter in a continuous watering pot. Light blue flowers are rarely produced in colder climates.

The very best variety for growing indoors as a foliage plant for kitchen and household use is "Salem".
'Majorca Pink' is smaller than the common type, having shorter leaves and amethyst-pink flowers.
'Tuscan Blue' grows upright from 2 to 4 feet tall, with dark blue flowers; it is useful as a border or hedge.
'Blue Boy' is compact and bushy with twisting stems; ideal for containers.
'Prostratus' has flexible, drooping branches. It is suitable for hanging baskets and is used as a groundcover in warmer regions.
'Lockwood De Forest' has lighter green foliage and deep blue flowers. It is good for draping over the top of a wall.
'Arp' is an exceptionally tough variety from northeast Texas that is hardy to -10° (Zone 6). It has light blue flowers.
'Nancy Howard' has white-flowers. It is also known as 'Alba Heavy Leaf.'
‘Logee Blue’ with dark blue flowers is less inclined to fungal disease indoors

Rosemary is a good companion to members of the cabbage family, protecting them from pests. Start indoors by sowing seeds thickly in light, well-drained soil 8 weeks before transplanting outdoors. Needs some shade. Transplant outdoors when 6 inches tall. Grows into large perennial shrubs in warm climates, but killed by frost everywhere. Cut sprigs as needed.

Rosemary does best with excellent drainage and can go dry between waterings. It is even considered drought tolerant! It grows 4' tall, but can be kept trimmed at any height. It is hardy to 0 degrees F. (zones 7-10). In cooler regions it can be grown as a house plant in a sunny window or as a patio plant, outside during the summer, and indoors during the winter.
