Carrying Equipment

There are times throughout the year that we yardeners have a need to move a pile of stuff from here to there. Autumn seems to bring more piles of debris than do the other seasons. Over the years I have settled on a number of “carrying devices” for moving stuff that worked well for me.

Garden Cart - Perhaps the carrier most used on our property is the ubiquitous Garden Cart. This is the wheel barrow for yardeners. It is a simple rectangular wooden box on large pneumatic wheels. One little person can move a load of two bales of straw very easily in the garden cart. In fact a larger model can carry 300 pounds of anything you need in the garden and yard.

You have several design choices. In addition to the simple box on wheels you can find models that allow you to remove the front panel of the box making it easy to unload something like mulch or compost

There are all kinds of devices to move or carry smaller loads of stuff such as recently pulled weeds, a few pounds of compost, some pea gravel, and the like. We have used the following tools with satisfaction.

Two Wheeled Garden Cart - There are dozens of models of smaller two wheeled garden carts available to yardeners. Because there are so many models on the market, I urge you to do some serious shopping around in stores and on the Internet before you buy one.

Fiskars Kangeroo Bags - This clever tool is a spring up type canvas pail that stays firmly open to hold whatever you need to move or store. Then when finished the task, you can press the bag top down to the bottom, connect a strap, and store it in the folded position. We have five of the 10 gallon size and two of the bigger size and we would like to have more. Several models are available on Amazon.com from $20 to $33.

Blue Ikea Bag – Nancy came home from Ikea and among all the things she bought that we did not need, she had 5 big dark blue heavy plastic bags with yellow handles. These cost fifty nine cents each and are made of the toughest flexible plastic material I have seen. They are big! You could sit two 5 gallon pails in one. Before I could ask why she had purchased so many large empty bags, she announced “gardening bags”! And she was right. The Ikea bag does all kinds of carrying and storing tasks in the yard and garden. Obviously it comes from the amazing Ikea store.

Container Carrying Device
