Loppers

If you need to cut a limb larger than 3/4 of an inch thick, use a lopper instead of damaging your hand pruner.

This tool is a larger version of the hand pruner and some models will cut limbs up to two inches in diameter. Loppers are usually bypass style, but anvil style loppers can be found. There's also a ratchet-action lopper that's cranked close like a car jack, allowing you to cut much larger branches. Lopper handles may be of straight grained ash or hickory. Solid steel handles add strength and overall weight. Tubular steel or fiberglass, are lighter and often as durable as metal versions. Look for handles with rubber cushions to absorb shock.
