Choosing St. Augustine
St. Augustine grass is most common in the coastal areas of the South. To produce an acceptable quality lawn, St. Augustine grass requires irrigation and moderate soil fertility. This grass has a coarse leaf texture which is a problem for some homeowners, but it has a dark green color and produces a dense turf with good salt tolerance.
Some varieties of St. Augustine tolerate a fair amount of shade. It tends to develop thatch and has poor wear tolerance. Chinch bugs are particular problem with St. Augustine grass. It is installed as either plugs or sod
