Region 1. Grasses For The Cool Humid North

This is a good region for a mixture of cool weather grasses in which Kentucky bluegrass predominates. Those mixtures featuring fine fescues work best in the part shade areas. The choice of tall fescue or perennial rye is in part dependent on whether you can predict a good snow cover for most of the winter most every year. These two grasses may suffer winterkill in unprotected lawns in the more northern sections of New England, New York, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. If you live in the Mid-Atlantic states and Midwest a mixture of Kentucky bluegrass and a fine fescue is probably the best choice.
