Apples Are Discolored With Dark Green Spots

Q: Apples are discolored with green dark spots. The apple trees involve are Lodi and Yellow Delicious. What causes this and it is ok to use in applesauce and pies?

A: Looks like a fungus called sooty blotch. The disease is limited to the surface of the fruit so peal the skin and cook away. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
