Arborvitaes Have Spider Mites And Are Hard To Keep Alive

Question From: s. beattie - Livonia, Michigan, United States
Q: Can you explain why its so hard keeping arborvitaes alive; we constantly are also trying to get rid of spider mites to keep them alive. Can you recommend a shrubbery that will not get diseased for our landscape.

A: Sue, Arbs are one of easiest shrubs to grow in Michigan. Spider mites become an issue on arbs that suffer from lack of water. Hosing the shrubs with a stiff spray every 4 to 5 days after treatment will keep them under control. Regular watering of newly planted shrubs is key to getting them well established. Do plant new shrubs early in the season and buy from a reputable nursery. It can take a couple of years for them to become established. Best Nancy and thanks for visiting Yardener.com
