Are Small Black Beetles In Garden Harmful Or Friendly

Question From: Anchorage, Alaska, United States
Q: What are the small black beetles that I find under objects in the garden and are hiding under roller pots and my garbage cans. They run for cover when exposed. Are they friend or foe? Thanks. Gary

A: Those little guys are a type of isopod, also known as woodlice or pill bugs. They usually feed on decomposing organic material and generally are not considered harmful. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
