Can Orchid Plant Food Spikes Be Used On Coneflower Seedlings

Question From: L. Crew - Washington, District of Columbia, United States
Q: Can I use orchid plant food spikes (10-10-10) on seedling coneflowers that I started outside(DC) a month or so ago, and have now brought them inside in a long, narrow planter. My 2 large windows are south-facing, but I have an up-trimmed a small, sweet bay magnolia outside them.

A: Do not use spikes on your seedlings. The are far to strong and may burn the plants roots. I would fertilize them once with a fish fertilizer at half strength. They will grow slowly over the winter and do not need fertilizer. Begin fertilizing them in March - every couple of weeks again at half strength. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
