Can String Trimmer Line Be Replaced With Metal Wire

Question From: Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany
Q: On a petrol strimmer the line breaks easily. Can I get a thin wire to put in the spool so it will not break as easy Regards william

A: William, I would not use wire as a replacement for the plastic string. The motor is geared for the size and weight line that comes with the trimmer. Using wire would probably burn out the motor, but even more important would be very dangerous to people as well as plants. Always use the brand and size recommended by the manufacturer. Cheaper products rarely work well. The moisture content of the plastic is key to length of life. Cheap or old line is brittle and breaks easily, so buy only what you can use in a season. I know folks who store theirs in water. Don't know if that works. Hope this helps. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
