Does Cat Poop Ruin The Soil For Edible Plants

Question From: Orem, Utah, United States
Q: We have a cat problem. The cats poop in our growbeds. Is it bad if we plant edible plants in a place where cats used to go? I think we can keep them out from now on but I am worried the soil is ruined and it will affect our plants.

A: I'd say the "stuff" would have to stay in the soil for at least a year, but I am not an expert. I would contact your county horticulture agent. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
