Ferns Seem Nearly Out Of The Soil After Winter

Question From: R. Molloy - Orchard Park, New York, United States
Q: My ferns, after the winter, seem to be nearly out of the soil. I'm not an experienced gardener - should I buy more topsoil and cover them to the crown?

A: Rosalie, let nature take its course. Ferns are tuff cookies. They have been around since dinos. No Miricle Gro ( I hate that stuff) just organic matter decomposing to give them nutrients. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
