Fernspray Seems Unhealthy And Has Lots Of Balls On Bottom Of Some Leaves

Question From: S. - Stamford, Connecticut, United States
Q: I have a fernspray that was doing so well, but seems to be in a funk. Upon my gardening, I came across lots of ball on the bottom of some leaves/branches....is this declared to be a loss or can it bounce back

A: Those green ball are actually cones. When plants are under stress they often produce lots of seeds. Hard to tell the problem, but the older needles look dry. To give it a boost fertilize it with Espoma Holly Tone in late winter or very early spring, according to package directions. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
