Forsythia Gets Few Blooms After Pruning

Question From: A. Wagoner - KENTUCKY
Q: I have a forsythia about three years I pruned last year an it is barley flowering It will not bloom all over only a branch or two will get blooms, any ideas what I did wrong an what is the best type of feritilzerier to use for a yellowing flowering forsythias?

A: If you pruned it late in the season you probably cut off the flower buds that begin to form in early August. A frost spring frost will also kill the flower buds. I would fertilize it now with Espoma Plant Tone at the recommended rate. If you have to prune. do so after the plant blooms. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
