Geranium Buds Shrink And Never Bloom

Question From: a. miller - Malverne, New York, United States
Q: Dear Nancy, I've grown geraniums for 40 years...never had this problem. It's on an ivy geraium, numerous buds but they shrink and never bloom? I don't believe I'm over watering or underwatering. All my others are blooming. I purchased six of these plants this year, they ALL have the same problem???

A: All my research leads to overwatering. Since you have a lot of experience with these plants, I'm thinking it's a soil issue. Any chance you are using Miracle Gro moisture control potting soil or a similar product. The soil is very heavy and holds moisture. Ivy geraniums aren't happy under those conditions. They like to dry down a bit. Check out brands at independent garden centers. I like Pro Mix to which I add a good quality compost. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy

Comment: thank you so much for your answer! I never use miracle grow products! I think it is moisture too. As the plant was new, it had been wrapped in plastic, and who knows for how long, also in a plastic pot. I have repotted with really good potting soil, fertilized, and treated with a hairpin protein spray! I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Thank you...Alicia
