Half Of Branches Of Bald Cypress Are Dead After Harsh Winter

Question From: K. Goodson - Port Byron, Illinois, United States
Q: My 25' Bald Cypress had a rough winter. It seems that at least half of the branches are dead. They still retain the dead copper colored foliage. The other limbs are growing green foliage. Any tips on pruning the dead limbs? Thank you in advance.

A: Try to make clean cuts and cut beyond the branch collar. Do not treat wounds with paint for any compound. It slows the healing and may cause rot. If you Google " how to prune and evergreen" you will find several websites with pictures. I'd consider hiring a certified arborist. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
