How To Find The Right Plants For My Yard

Question From: B. Ferraro - Liverpool, New York, United States
Q: I live in a suburb of Syracuse , New York , zone 5b and am wanting to do some landscaping. I am interested in putting a decorative tree in a contained area that wont get too tall or wide ie :weeping cherry and have 2 tall columns on either side of my front porch entryway that I would like to place an evergreen on each side that does not need too much maintenance and will not become overgrown to give a pleasant formal grandiose (?) look to the front of the house, creating a focal point . Im wanting something tall like an Italian Cypress, which I understsnd might not be hardy enough and which will have to be kept at a certain height or one that will stay a medium height and a conical shape but not need constant pruning or get too wide. Can you give me any iideas or am I being extremely demanding and unreasonable?

A: Print out your wish list and take it along with photos of the existing site to a garden center or nursery in your area that provides landscaping services and sells these kinds of trees. Many garden centers provide landscaping advice free if you agree to buy the plant materials from them. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
