How To Immerse Potted Plant In Hot Water To Remove Nematodes

Question From: Elmwood Park, New Jersey, United States
Q: Hi Nancy, I live in apartment and have a bird's nest fern as a indoors houseplant. I noticed black dots recently and decided to search web for answers… well now I know the plant has Nematodes :( Saw your remedy suggestion on this site, I wanted to know if the whole plant while still in a pot (meaning all leaves, soil, pot itself) should be immersed in hot water at 110°F for 10 to 15 minutes, to rid it of Pest Nematodes? I'd have to use a large plastic bin and boil water to fill it at that temperature? thanks Doris

Doris, Be sure your thermometer is accurate or you will cook your plant. Immerse it only to the soil level. The leaves will be damaged if they come in contact with the hot water. Good Luck, Nancy
