How To Keep Squirrels Out Of Hole In Chestnut Tree

Question From: d. Burlage - MASSACHUSETTS
Q: I have a very old chestnut tree in my yard that was here when I bought my house. Arborists have estimated that it is about 75 years old. It has a very large hole in the trunk and squirrels and chipmunks are inhabiting it. Can you please suggest something safe to fill it with? Thanks very much

A:

Better to put a screen around it using something like hardware cloth. Filling it in creates a moist environment that attracts fungal diseases. Best Nancy
