How To Seal Ceramic Plant ID Tags For Protection Outdoors

Question From: L. Larson - Grosse Pointe, Michigan, United States
Q: Can you recommend a sealant to put on ceramic plant id tags so I can leave them outside without worrying that they will crack? My daughter made me name tags for my garden plants when she took a class at Pewabic Pottery but they are unglazed on the back. Thank-you.

A: You might try Thompson's Water Seal. That said, there are no guarantees. If they touch the soil they are vulnerable as they may absorb moisture and it expands when it freezes. If they were mine, I would gather them up and store them in a protected area. Best Nancy
