Magnolia Tree Does Not Have Buds Or Leaf Formation In May

Question From: Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States
Q: magnolia tree does not have blooms or leaf formation. we live in Mich. The tree is 15 yearsold and has bloomed /grown well and florished thru the years. What could be wrong?

A: Last winter and the winter before we suffered record cold temperatures. Many trees are very late leafing out and flower buds were killed over the winter. Be patient - if you see no life by the middle of June your tree may have perished. Take a knife or finger nail and scrape away a bit of bark. If you see green there is hope. In the mean time do make sure it is getting enough water. Good Luck and Thanks for visiting Yardener.com, Nancy
