Peony Bush Has Buds But No Blooms

Question From: IOWA
Q: Stems with buds are extending six or more inches beyond "bush." It is early in season but expect "non bloom" (no flower this year). What sould I do? I put down a little bone meal 1 mo. ago plus some 10 10 10 in a "circle" around plants Why no bloom. Why 6 - 8 inches from "bush." Thank you

A: Dennis, an untimely freeze can wipe out the buds of a peony. I suggest you be patient. Roots extend out as well as down and that is what you are feeding.
That said, too much nitrogen will prevent them from flowering. Water - enough to keep the soil moist is key. Best and Happy Yardening, Nancy.
