Planting Fall Bulbs In March

Question From: L. Alvarez - VIRGINIA
Q: Dear Nancy, I just came back from Home Depot and they still have lots of bags of bulbs - daffodils and tulips- that did not sell out in the fall. I love bulbs and feel like I should save some of them. But it is March in northern Virginia and I don't want to waste my time ... In February I went to a garden center, bought some fall bulbs and planted 3 pots. I am happy to report that 1.5 of the pots are budding, so I am expecting flowers. If you have any advice on whether it is worth giving these bulbs a chance, please let me know. Thank you so much for answering my question. Best regards.

I recommend you pass on these. The daffs may be okay, but the bulbs need to be firm, like a bulb of garlic. They will not flower this season, but should next year. Don't even think about the tulips. I personally would go for some dahlias. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
