Salvia And Petunias Planted Near Trees Are Dying

Question From: C. Mueller - TEXAS
Q: I have planted red salvia and dark purple petunias together in my tree rings. I planted them about a week ago and have watered them 3 times since. They are now both dying. Am I watering them too much or too little? I figured with my trees being crepe myrtles that they would get enough sun during the day. What am I doing wrong?

A: I can't help you on this one. The soil should be moist at all times. Check it daily by sticking your finger in it and see how long it takes to begin to dry. It's pretty hard for the roots of flowers to compete with tree roots for moisture. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
