When To Fertilize Young Climbing Rose

Question From: London, Ontario, Canada
Q: Hi Nancy. I planted my climbing tree (Westerland) in July 20th. Until now it is mid August I have not fertilized it yet. Should I use light rose food on it or leave it like that to get ready for winter? I do notice it grows pretty slowly but still blooms. Thank you so much.

A: It's too late to fertilize roses. New growth will be tender and not winter hardy. I fertilize my roses when they begin to bud out in spring. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
