Will Water Softened With Salt Brine Harm Plants

Question From: E. KALPIN - MICHIGAN
Q: The resort where we spend most of our summers has decided to put in a water softener, using salt brine. It is our only source of water. Will it be harmful to our plants?

A:

Eleanor, I can't say. I suggest you have the water tested to find out the salt content. If you are talking about outdoor plants, I doubt they are using softened water outdoors. Too expensive. When we had our house built I had the cold water tap in my kitchen bypassed. My outdoor taps also bypass the softener. Check with the manager to find out about your setup. Rainwater or bottled water may be the answer. Happy Yardening, Nancy
