Winterberry Holly Plant Leaves Are Yellowing

Question From: Weaverville, North Carolina, United States
Q: I have several red sprite winterberry plants, put in about 5 years ago. Last fall one wasn't looking good & was dead this spring. Several of the others have leaves that have yellow tinge. Any suggestions on what I need to do? Special fertilizer?

A: These native shrubs must be well watered and will not tolerate drought. They also need acidic soil. I would fertilize them with Holly Tone by Espoma according to package directions. Get your soil tested to see if you need additional amendments. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
