orsythia Bushes Have A Hole In The Center Of Cut Branches

Question From: S. Jones - Cambridge, Maryland, United States
Q: after pruning our forsythia bushes we discovered most of the branches have a hole in the center of the branches, is this caused by a worm? If so is there an insecticide or something else we can use?

A: The hole is caused by a borer. If the shrub is doing well I would not treat for it. If it seems to be an issue check with your independent garden center for a product and timing of use to control the insect. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
