Files About Shrubs

Shrubs are generally defined as anything growing from a base of multiple woody stems up to about 15 feet tall. Many shrubs are evergreen (they hold onto their leaves the year round) and many others are deciduous (they drop their leaves each fall). Shrubs serve many purposes in the landscape. They add warmth and visual interest to the winter garden, protection from howling winds, and shelter for birds and other wildlife. Many shrubs can be grown individually so that we can enjoy their brilliant flowers (there are shrub roses, too), colorful fruit, or autumn foliage color. Others can be grown as hedges along the edge of a yard to create a living privacy screen, or they can be trained against walls to resemble vines. Still other shrubs can provide height in yards that are too small to accommodate full-sized trees.
