Canada geese are our only goose species with a distinctive white “chinstrap” marking. An adult goose may stand 3 feet tall and weigh up to 14 pounds. Geese mate for life, establish a breeding territory, and build large shallow nests near a body of water. The nest is usually on the ground but sometimes geese will nest in odd spots such as abandoned osprey nests or on flower boxes and apartment balconies. An average of 5 eggs are laid. The female broods the eggs while the male stands guard. Eggs hatch in about 25 days, and the young are ready to fly in about 2 months. The urban goose may live 20 or even 30 years, while his country cousin, who must deal with predators and hunters, may last only nine.
