Crab Apple Tree Bark Is Peeling And A Huge Branch Has No Leaves

Question From: Cottage Grove, Minnesota, United States
Q: The bark of my crab apple tree has some type of fungus growing on it and I am unsure how to fix this. I think it’s effecting the tree at this point because one HUGE branch of this tree is not even growing leaves anymore. I have been trying to read up on it, but everything I read mentions discoloration of leaves. I think this is more of a problem with the bark, not the leaves. HELP! I attached a picture of what it kind of looks like.

A: The bark is peeling off from freeze damage which likely began the winter of 2014. The damage is severe in the picture and the branch is dying if not already dead. There is nothing to be done but let nature take its course. Consider replacing the tree. Best Nancy
