Dinosaur Kale Has Black Spots On Leaves And Stems

Question From: San Sebastián, PUERTO RICO, Puerto Rico
Q: Hello. I live in Puerto Rico. I am using the Back to Eden Garden Method (wood chips). I planted dinosaur Kale. Most of the plant have black spots on the stem and leaves. I have put some used coffee ground aroud each plant twice. How can I deal with this situation, organically. Thanks

A: Your Kale has a fungal disease called black spot. I would start a new crop in another area of the garden. You can try treating the plants with a biofungicide such as RootShield. Do not replant kale in that portion of the garden for three years. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
