Do Leaves Used For Mulch Need To Be Shredded

Question From: Franklin, Michigan, United States
Q: Hi Nancy: I read your column of 11/6/15. Thanks for the information. However, I would like to know if it would be O.K. to let the leafs remain in the beds without chopping or shredding them, as you suggested? To me, that would save a step in the process, as I would not have to cut and bag the leafs prior to spreading them in the beds. What would be the results? Currently I mulch the leafs in the yard with favorable results. Thank You, Bill

A: Mother Nature mulches with whole leaves and so do lots of gardeners. They are not as attractive and may need to be removed in spring, depending on the depth. It's up to you. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
