How Late Can Emerald Green Arborvitae Be Planted

Question From: Johnstown, Pennsylvania, United States
Q: I am thinking of getting several emeralds green arborviate as a hedge and a place for birds to shelter or is this type of tree too tight for a bird to get into. Also, what is the lastest time in the fall that I should plant these in PA. How often do I water after I first plant them? Thanks

A: I'd get them into the ground ASAP. The bitter winters have been very hard on even well established plants. Keep the root balls moist at all times. Every site is different, and weather makes a big difference. Stick your finger in the ground to check for moisture. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy

Q: Thanks for you reply but also is this a good type of evergreen for birds to get into for shelter or are the branches too tight. This is why I am planting them near by bird feeders for shelter.

A: In the winter, for protection tighter is better Linda. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
