How To Save And Plant Tulip Bulbs

Question From: P. Lawson - Troy, Michigan, United States
Q: Hello Nancy, I recently purchased a few potted tulip plants that were in bloom. My intention is to plant the bulbs in my garden. My questions are: What are the steps for saving the bulbs for planting? When is the best time to plant the bulbs? When will they bloom again? If this topic has already been covered in one of your columns, I'll be glad to look it up if you can give me the date. My husband & I enjoy your column every week. Thank you very much.

A: Tulips are iffy here in Michigan as far as reblooming and the forced bulbs even more so. You will have to wait until Spring of 2016 to find out. Some types, such as specie tulips do better than others. Keep the bulbs watered and allow the foliage to yellow. Then stop watering and store them in the garage until the weather warms and you can dig. Plant them in an area where they will get sun a year from next spring. Personally, I would add them to the compost pile and plant tulips next fall. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
