Is It Okay To Not Mulch Perennial Beds For Winter

Question From: C. Rockman - Massachusetts, United States
Q: Is it okay to leave your perennial beds not mulched over the winter (in Massachusetts) and wait to mulch them in the Spring? I have mulched them on both seasons in the past, but need to to save money this year -- the beds are quite large! Thank you so much!

A: How about shredded leaves Catlin? Check with your DPW, you may be able to get them for free. Just an inch would be better than none. If that is not possible, it's not the end of the world. But plan to use leaves next year. They are Mother Nature's way of feeding the soil. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
