Magnolia Tree Leaves Turning Brown And Covered In Fuzz

Question From: Park Hills, Missouri, United States
Q: We have a magnolia tree that was planted about four years ago. We live in northeast MO and it has grown quite nicely, although we have had a short cold snap a few weeks ago. Now we see a problem with the leaves turning brown and wilting with a fuzzy covering. We are not sure if this is a fungal disease or the dreaded verticullium wilt. Can you see by just looking at the photo what it could possibly be?

A: Cut a branch tip with several leaves to local nursery that specializes in Magnolias or better yet get an onsite inspection from a trained tree doctor, a certified arborist. A bad guess could cost you the tree. Good Luck, Nancy.
