Pine Tree Leader Branch Died

Question From: G. DeWall - NEW MEXICO
Q: The top of my 10' Austrian PIne died 2 winters ago here in New Mexico when we had below zero temperatures not common for Albuquerque. No other part of the tree has been visually effected in the last 21 months. The tree appears to be healthy with new growth in all other areas. The leader branch and the next small row of branches still appear dead. Notable candles are on the dead part of the tree. I was hoping that new candles would develop and it would recover. Help! Thanks.

A:

If it produced no green growth this year the branch is dead. Cut out the dead stem and take a branch from below it and wire it in an upright position so it will form the new leader and not leave you with a topless tree. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
